The game’s graphics have been vastly improved from the original, although they were very decent back then too. Which is great since my main complaint about other games that use the touchpad to simulate controls tend to cover up the action with them (I’m looking at you, The Simpsons!) They are just big enough for one’s thumbs and out of the way of the game. The fact that the action stays in the center of the screen is great since the 6 buttons are laid out very efficiently on each side of the screen at the bottom.

The screen layout is even nearly identical to Punch-Out!: your boxer’s upper body is small at the bottom of the screen and your opponent appears huge.

Just like in Punch-Out!, the controls in SKOB2 are extremely easy: you can dodge left, dodge right, punch an opponent’s face, punch an opponent’s body, block or throw the occasional super punch. Kid, a young boxer going up against a whole slew of wacky characters on your way to become the world champion. Boxing 2 is the spiritual child of one of the all-time classic Nintendo games, Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out! You play as the K.O. And let me tell you that it was well worth the download!

I enjoyed the game so much that when I was browsing the app store on my iPod touch and saw that the game’s sequel was available for iPhones and iPods, I didn’t hesitate to plunk down the 2.99 to download it. I spent many a bus ride playing it but lost it when my old phone gave up the ghost. If you’ve been reading this blog for a long time, loyal reader, you may remember that nearly four years ago, I gave a very positive review to a great little boxing game for cell phones called Super K.O.
